Story Walks!

Hello everyone! This will be my final blog post for the time being. The topic for today is story walks! For a story walk, basically you choose any children’s book that is engaging and active. Then, you plan an activity for every page or at least the majority of the pages (the activity can be done at that stop or a movement activity as you head over to the next page!). Now what I mean by stops is, every page is photocopied and blown up to a larger size and is put on a walking trail or path as a sign (signs like what you put on your front lawn to promote a business or election candidate). As you walk down the path, stop at every page and read the page and then complete the activity chosen for that page. It can be doing ten star jumps at the page, or hopping like a frog to the next page.

I have attached the link to a story walk that I created on this blog. Mine uses the book Out in the Bush by Yvonne Morrison. My story walk supports STEM in multiple ways. For science, the nature aspect of the activity allows for exploration and creativity. All of the activities are open-ended, and therefore up to the children’s interpretation. This activity allows for children to connect to nature, and the specific activities allows children to connect their life to the story. For technology, this activity does not use a large variety of tools for exploration but documenting the experience is one way to support technology. For engineering, the activity has lots of communicating and sharing ideas with others as well as drawing ideas and exploring ideas based on the selected book for this story walk. For math, this activity incorporates lots of math language and concepts. There is lots of number sense and counting for a majority of the activities throughout the story walk.

Try the story walk I created, or find a book that you enjoy and create your own! Have fun and enjoy your story walk!
